This client had a significant management consultant business ownership background and wanted to maximise a successful transition into a senior corporate executive role within a large public company. Recognising how different corporate organisations operate, as well as their demands placed on an individual to be successful in the corporate environment, he chose to employ executive coaching to guide him through this transition.
Within a 10 session program over 4 months, we focused initially on positioning and internally marketing his corporate role and function in order to quickly enhance corporate visibility. Then we concentrated on using my soft skills training that were focused on rapport and communications, diplomacy, listening, negotiation, and networking to really polish his interpersonal interaction with those that mattered.
We did the same through leadership coaching and performance management. We focused on planning, delegation, performance, productivity and coping to help assure his stakeholder position, results traction and service unit performance outcomes.
We emphasised on "managing up" by identifying individuals within the organisation who held power and influence over his agenda. The client could then target them with specific sound bites and anecdotes amongst his stakeholders. We found ways to positively influence the outcomes of his agenda by exploring new perspectives and finding constructive ways around the prevailing organisation structure deficiencies. We honed his internal and external networking skills to help build an influential support base for his ideas and initiatives.
We invested quality time in scenario management planning and preparation for presentations, board meetings, reviews and strategic planning events; as well raising his visibility, productivity and outcomes from meetings - both those that he called - and those that he was invited to.
Given my comparable domain background, I was able to provide significant mentoring input for my client's success. We did this by setting and measuring relevant KPI's, assertively managing outsourcing partners who could produce outcomes, pro-actively "drip feeding" specific results to the right people at the right time, and remaining focused on positioning with his team for optimum results.
In a career management focus, I coached the client through a difficult "political" situation. The reversal of an organisational iniquity wanted to reposition his role. Subsequently, we considered the right entrance strategies, new KPI's and management of expectations from this new reporting relationship to gain maximum traction for his new manager, his own image, the teams and the overall company.
